Confuting Myths of Abortion

It is complicated initially for someone to understand abortion. The perspective of each individual can be subjective and provided if someone in their lives has gone through the whole process, only then a person can understand what it means to the one experiencing it. It’s also been a topic of debate and quite controversial yet it’s a very important aspect of a woman's life.

We must be focused on the facts that abortion comes with and not the feelings behind it that could create myths and assumptions about abortion. Let’s debunk some of the common myths about abortion listed down below –

Myth 1: Abortion Means a Surgical Process

Fact: Not only in the United States but in most parts of the world medical abortion is conducted in 70% of cases subject to the gestational age. Medical abortion is a harmless procedure that does not require any surgery. It needs to be strictly performed under 12 weeks of pregnancy only then it can show efficient and promising results. FDA-certified medications are recommended to shun an unwanted pregnancy. Doctors highly recommend women buy MTP Kit online, which has Mifepristone and Misoprostol as the abortion pills in the kit. The abortion medicine (1 Mifepristone) happens to block the pregnancy hormone progesterone required for a pregnancy to be viable. The rest of the pills (4 Misoprostol) from the MTP Kit cause severe cramps eventually leading to vaginal bleeding. The process empties the uterus making abortion successful.

Myth 2: Abortion? No, It’s Dangerous

Fact: In certain pregnancy cases, the pregnancy itself can be a threat to a woman’s life but on the contrary abortion is much safer than continuing the pregnancy. It is in fact, safer than many options available these days.

Before FDA approval of abortion pills when the procedure of abortion was extremely restrictive and there was no access to abortion, people opted for unsafe methods of abortion. This led to most causes of maternal death. If numbers and facts are to be trusted, then to date, in areas where safe abortion access is not permitted, the number of death cases has increased drastically.

If considered from the patient's health point of view, it is always safer to opt for an abortion than a continued pregnancy.

Myth 3: Abortion Causes Major Psychological Agony

Fact: To date, there have been no affirmations on the long-term psychological effects of abortion on women’s mental health. There are very few cases wherein women regret opting for an abortion.

A study of 1000 women who underwent abortion stated their concerns. Amongst this figure, there were some with no legal access to this procedure whereas many had an access to it.

Some women who could not have legal, safe, and were denied access to abortion had to face major physical and mental issues with very less life aspirations.

Of women who could receive a healthy and accessible environment for abortion, amongst them, 95% reported that it was their best life decision. These statements were jotted down after 5 years of them going through the abortion procedures.

Distress can be caused only when a person is dealing with an unwanted pregnancy. It can affect the pregnant women’s health as well as the family member's. As such women have been noticed to experience –

· Unstable financial life

· Worst mental health

· Poor quality of life

Hence in such cases, abortion is rather a blessing than a curse.

Myth 4: Abortion Hurts the Fetus

Fact: An abortion (especially medical abortion) is conducted before the fetus has the neurological ability to feel pain or other sensations.

As per research and experts, the neurological system starts to develop from the 26th week of pregnancy in order to feel pain sensations and by that time, the fetus requires much more neurological abilities and advancements in order to be aware of the pain and experience it. This is one of the biggest myths that need to be busted, which restricts so many women from taking a step ahead.

Myth 5: Abortion Affects Future Pregnancy Abilities

Fact: Abortion conducted through abortion pills have no proven effects on not becoming pregnant in the future. Surgical abortion has some extremely rare cases of future infertility yet found to be treatable.

There has been no proven outcome of abortions increasing the risk of ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, premature birth, or low birth rate.

Myth 6: Birth Control Pills (Plan B) are Abortion Pills

Fact: Birth control pills do not induce abortion. These pills tend to prevent pregnancy by stopping the fertilization of the egg. In other terms, it prevents pregnancy by delayed ovulation.

If a woman has ovulated and the eggs have already been fertilized, then a contraceptive pill would not work for her in stopping the pregnancy or terminating the pregnancy.

Conclusion

Myths claiming that abortion causes infertility in women trigger bad mental health or they’re dangerous are created by people who are against abortion for years now in order to demoralize women’s rightful access to their good health.
