Abortion and Breast Cancer – Are They Linked?

Researchers state that there has been little to no possible link between abortion and breast cancer. Know it all here before you plan to buy abortion pill online and get your procedure started. It is always recommended to discuss every minute of the details with your healthcare advisor before taking up a medical abortion for your pregnancy termination procedure which is less than 12 weeks.

Does abortion increase breast cancer risk?

Abortion does not account for breast cancer in women. Breast cancer could possibly occur due to obesity, age, family history, and different reasons. A non-considerable amount of study shows some connection but a major study does state otherwise.

The possibilities of breast cancer connection are related to the change in hormone levels that occur during an abortion. The hormones present in the female body progesterone and estrogen tend to trigger abnormal growth in breast cells. Since we’re all aware that abortions are of two different types –

· Miscarriage, spontaneous or unintended pregnancy loss occurring in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy.

· Medical, induced, or surgical abortion of pregnancy.

As per the study and research, both types of abortions have no connection with breast cancer.

What do the researchers state about abortion and breast cancer?

A] Studies that state no correlation between abortion and breast cancer are usually cohort studies. Such studies usually start with a group of women who do not have breast cancer and then follow up on the same group of women to check if they develop breast cancer over time.

The biggest research of all time that was conducted in the year 1997 and published in a famous journal in New England which included about 1.5 million women to understand the possible risks of breast cancer had found no relation between breast cancer and abortion.

We also have data from other studies that concluded with similar information –

1) In about 53 studies, 83,000 women across 16 countries were experiencing breast cancer. Not even a single woman had an increased risk of breast cancer due to an induced or spontaneous abortion.

2) In about 1 lakh women from the U.S., there was no increased breast cancer risk between any of the two abortion types.

B] Some case-control studies have found a connection between abortion and breast cancer wherein a comparison was conducted between women who do not have breast cancer and women who have and understand their health history.

It could be a little tedious to find accurate analysis in such cases as there can be people who might not remember their past health history. Also, since abortion is a sensitive and societal stigma topic, women tend to be hesitant more often.

Studies with some correlation between abortion and breast cancer –

1) In about 36 studies, it was found out by researchers that breast cancer and induced abortion were associated with each other.

2) Also, 1300 women from China found out to have a link between the two.

Since these studies have less accuracy level, a huge number of medical groups state that there is no profound evidence that connects the two.

What are the complications and side effects of abortion?

Abortion can possess certain complications or side effects just like any other medical procedure –

Severe Side Effects:

· Complex pain

· Extreme vaginal bleeding

· High temperature (lasting longer than 24 hours)

· Smelly vaginal discharge

Complications of Abortion:

· Excessive bleeding

· Uterus infection

· Incomplete abortion (requires immediate attention and another abortion procedure to be conducted)

· Cervix or uterus damage

· Might experience premature birth in a future pregnancy

What causes breast cancer?

Women with a higher level of estrogen hormone, women with longer menstrual cycles, or women consuming birth control pills at recurring intervals tend to have a higher chance of breast cancer.

Different Risks Include:

· Genes

· Taking hormone therapy or birth control pills

· Late menopause

· Early menstruation
